So I bought a 2013 Frontier...

Kinja'd!!!

It’s a one owner truck bought new and serviced at the Nissan dealer I bought it from (Barrie Nissan). It’s pretty loaded and came with a folding tonneau cover. She’s a 4.0L, 4x4 with a 6-speed stick. I’m happy with it and it’s damn near mint for a 5 year old truck.

As for my supercharged Xterra, I had an oncoming Civic swerve for a deer an come into my lane, I swerved for them and absolutely launched the truck through a ditch and into a field. Even though it still runs mint the frame is right bent. This summer we’ll take the body, motor, trans and transfer case from the bent Xterra and put them all on the straight frame of my parts truck and build a fun little off-road rig out of it.

But for now, I’ve got something a hell of a lot more reliable, slightly more economical, and with three pedals.

Have you checked the feasibility of putting the supercharged motor in your Frontier?

My plan is to replace my wife’s Elantra with a Frontier and give her the pathfinder

The 4.0L in the Frontier makes 261hp, the 3.3L Supercharged V6 from my Xterra makes MAYBE 240hp with the reduction pulley I have on it. Plus the 4.0L makes WAY more torque, is way more efficient, and way more reliable. I love the VG33ER from my Xterra, and it’s a hell of a lot of fun to play with, but the 4.0L is easier to live with.

South of Barrie. Everett, Ontario. About 10km northwest of Alliston.

I love it. Honestly driving it feels like what I imagine driving my Xterra wouldn have felt like when it was new. Nissan has never changed a damn thing on their trucks and I love it. It has A LOT of motor for such a little truck. And the 6-Speed seems to make it pretty damn efficient for a truck.

Agree. My heart will always be with the VG33ER because it’s so much fun to play with (and makes a beautiful noise). But the VQ40DE is just way easier to live with, and it’s a much better all around motor.

Almost like the one I had in highschool (2007, V6, RWD, auto), but it met its end like this:

I still miss that truck.

Hmm, interesting. Kind of a shame that the supercharged motor doesn’t offer any more power.

maybe you can stick a supercharger on the VQ40DE?

That’s how my Xterra ended up! But, I walked away absolutely fine because Nissan safety cages are unreal. Just watch this:

The VQ40DE sounds great with a hole in the muffler.

Actually Stillen makes a supercharger kit for the VQ40DE so it’s entirely possible.

The VG33ER is a lot of fun to play with though. I’m sure it could be built to epic proportions as it has fully forged internals, so it has the 4.0L beat there.

I walked away with with a scratch on my knee. Shocking for hitting a ditch side ways at 80kph, flipping then hitting a tree upside down in the air then landing on the roof. It was a write off.

Honestly Nissan builds way better trucks/SUVs than people give them credit for. I towed more with my little 3.3L Xterra than most people do with their diesel RAMs. And they’re safe as hell to boot.

Welcome to the VQ40/F-Alpha club!

One thing that I do love about this gen of Nissan trucks is that, even though the comparable Toyotas have comparable numbers on the surface, the torque curve favors the lower end of the gearbox, so there’s much more oomph off the line. Steering is also nicely responsive, so you can really play with them.

I always had this crazy scheme involving two Frontiers, an Xterra, and a good hoist...

Did you proceed to slowly and methodically dismember the driver of the Civic?

Yeah I don’t think the 4runner would hold up half that well.

Those are very solid trucks. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
